Sweden Meetx has, together with the organising committee, environmentally certified the international conference ECOC 2017 in accordance with standards from Svensk Miljöbas (Swedish Environmental Base).

ECOC 2017 is taking place at the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre in Gothenburg from 17 to 21 September. ECOC is the largest conference on optical communication in Europe, and one of the largest and most prestigious events in this field worldwide. On 17 September 1,200 delegates are set to arrive in Gothenburg.

Meetx, together with the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre, has organised environmental certification on behalf of ECOC, which is now the largest international scientific congress to have received certification in Sweden in 2017. The majority of the other certified events are festivals and sports events.

In brief, environmental certification involves reviewing the environmental aspects of the congress on a practical level. We have implemented around 50 actions to reduce the negative impact on the environment and be socially responsible. This includes having encouraged all our partners/suppliers, e.g. hotels and restaurants, to act in a sustainable way.

“Obviously the project has been made easier by the fact that it is taking place in Gothenburg, which is a world leader in sustainable meetings and has the ‘greenest’ hotels in Europe. However, it is a process that has taken some time and involves influencing not just our partners and suppliers, but also the delegates attending the conference. One tangible example is a ‘green sponsor package’, where the conference has taken all its sponsor revenue and offset delegate travel to the tune of SEK 300,000,” says Anna Sundström, Senior Project Manager at Sweden Meetx.
